Filling cavities? Pulling teeth? Today's dental practice has moved beyond the basics. Increasing cutbacks in German health care have prompted many dentists in that country to pep up their practices in order to maintain a reasonabel margin of profit. (...) GRAFT architects have shown how the old-fashioned dental surgery can be transformed into a contemporary health-care complex.

The multifunctional practice on Kurfürstendamm in Berlin contains nine treatment rooms, a maxillofacial surgery, an X-ray room, a homeopathic practice, a dental laboratory, a reception, a lounge, a spa and more.

The original enrance hall and waiting room have been converted into an espresso bar, which GRAFT calls "the lounge", complete with fireplace. Here guests - previously calles "patients" - are welcomed by the bracing aroma of coffee. While kids play computer games, adults can use the internet conncetion for working or just browsing while they wait.

The sterile atmosphere and piles of magazines so typical of the ordinary waiting room have been banned from this space forever. Instead, guests are enveloped in surroundings that gleam like a ripe orange in the summer sun. (...)
